The photos I just uploaded show a combination of three of the design elements you showed in your inspiration photos. :) it's going to take some time but we are excited. Results would be that we can move directly from the house/ kitchen area up the steps and into our yard - rather then out, then down steps then over through patio the up a longer flight of stairs and back over. I've seen some nice meandering concrete stone steps look with retaining walls in various ways to hold back hill and at the top we'll build a small deck with seating under the new tree and maybe even a narrow rectangular fire pit. We had a landscape designer come out for an hour consultation and agreed it needs access to the top. We knocked down a little of the length of the upper retainer wall ( to walk around) and we just now mapped out that we will take the leap and cut into the lower white wall to add stairs to access the upper yards more quickly. Yes, we planted it too close to the retaining wall. To the right towards top of hill we planted a marina strawberry tree for shade on the house in the hot summer. :) the slope is the same at the moment but the lower section has cana and hibiscus growing nicely (to tie in the tropical look on the patio area more to left) and to block visual a little with up hill neighbors. we have in fact done some work on it but finally just yesterday came up with a final plan. Again, make sure the designer is qualified and understands your needs, goals and budget. Do not wing it, get a plan that makes sense on paper. will also had great interests and value during your season and evenings. Check out their work and finished product (minimum 5 years in the ground). It is important that you find a competent landscape designer or architect that understands plant colors, textures,complimentary combinations, growth habits, etc., so it matures properly (not get over grown and disproportion).
Then the landscaping along the foundation, ornamental trees in the lawn will create scale, depth and interest. It depends upon the tones you select for the garage doors and drive, continuity is very important in creating a pleasing design theme for your home/yard.
Maybe a brick that has some color to visually draw attention to the entry (a deep brownish/orange brick tone, pick up samples and bring them home). A new walkway, with a new/better material and shape would help. Which would be less costly than replacing the driveway surface, unless it is in your budget. Painting the garage doors a more neutral color that compliments the color pallet of your home would play them down and possibly doing an acid stain to the concrete drive as well. Their ability to handle pruning also makes some varieties great as hedges.I agree with several of the previous comments made, there is too much emphasis on the driveway and the garage doors, opposed to the entry of your home. Junipers can handle pretty heavy pruning. You can prune juniper shrubs pretty much any time of the year. After that, your Junipers will rarely need watering except during prolonged periods without rain. Water weekly after planting until established. Very little is needed as far as care is concerned with Junipers.
